Miracles: 32 True Stories by Joanie Hileman

Miracles 32 True Stories

A dying child counts angels in her room. A teenage boy stuns doctors by recovering from a massive brain injury. A bubble of protection surrounds a man about to be hit by a car…These miraculous accounts and twenty-nine more are recorded in Miracles: 32 True Stories.

“Almost every month I get a request to either read or edit a book or booklet, and to be honest, I dread to see them coming, because most of them are hardly worthy of a positive recommendation. When Joan asked me to read her Miracles, I was not looking forward to reading it at all … much to my surprise I could not stop reading it until I had read the entire book. Each story was different enough to keep my interest, and God’s finger-print was all over each of the stories told. There was never one bit of doubt who authored each of those stories…” BILL IRWIN, CHRISTIAN AUTHOR AND SPEAKER

*****

Not my normal book for reading, but was rather interesting on the numerous miracles that were believed and perceived to have occurred by those on the precipice of losing faith.

Billy Graham TV Classics

Billy Graham TV Classics

A collection of Billy Graham Television Classic shows and Evangelistic events. While I was not much of a Billy Graham viewer as a child, I have come to appreciate his old programs. As of lately, I have been watching these shows, whether on YouTube or on his Billy Graham TV Classics web site. It is quite intriguing to see what he had to say, and either research what he said, or use it on my blogs. He was truly a man of God who taught many of us about the path of God.

Pain: The Divine Mystery: Why God Allows Suffering by Elmer L. Towns

Pain

Pain is an enigma-a haunting reality-we all face. Whether the pain you are experiencing is chronic or the result of a new injury or illness, you have no doubt asked the Lord, Why? Why must I suffer? Why must the pain be so intense or so never-ending?

Elmer Towns confronted similar questions as he withstood the debilitating effects of cancer treatment. As he sought to find something precious in the enduring, Towns realized that pain can draw the mature believer into closer intimacy with God.

Pain: The Divine Mystery will help you look at your own suffering through the eyes of the Master Sculptor-He who has the highest purpose in place for your life. You will be challenged to examine your deepest fears, to discover God’s part in your healing, and to pursue better overall health in the process.

You will find, as Towns did, that even pain can be endured when you have a purpose to live through it. As you seek to understand the “why” behind your own suffering, God will reveal much more than you can imagine: He will reveal Himself. Pain has a divine purpose for spiritual breakthrough.

*****

This was an interesting book as it treated pain as an entity from which we could learn, or that it was a teaching tool. “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” ~Romans 8:28 NKJV We all have things, inanimate and otherwise, which will teach us…pain is no different. God uses pain also to teach us about our body and to teach us perseverance, as well as patience. Well worth the time to read and it is a short read, at that!

Dead Man Rising

DeadManRising

When Daniel, a death row inmate, hears the horrors of previous executions using new experimental drugs, he pleads for access to information on how to best face his own, upcoming demise.  What this faithless and hopeless prisoner finds instead, will shake up everything he has ever known, ever believed.

Parental Warning: Mild Language

*****

This was one of those movies I was not so sure about going into it, but afterward was glad that I did not bypass it. A man on death row finally starts looking into what happens when he dies. He has a debate of sorts with an (apparently) atheistic fellow death row inmate. Toward the end, everything comes into perspective. Well worth the time to watch.

Test Of Faith

Test Of Faith

A college student’s faith is tested when his professor bases his final grade on a paper that contradicts his beliefs.

You might consider this the very first, or the springboard for, God’s Not Dead movie series. It was very good and interesting and only lasted about an hour.

The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X, Alex Haley

MalcolmX

Through a life of passion and struggle, Malcolm X became one of the most influential figures of the 20th Century. In this riveting account, he tells of his journey from a prison cell to Mecca, describing his transition from hoodlum to Muslim minister. Here, the man who called himself “the angriest Black man in America” relates how his conversion to true Islam helped him confront his rage and recognize the brotherhood of all mankind.

An established classic of modern America, “The Autobiography of Malcolm X” was hailed by the New York Times as “Extraordinary. A brilliant, painful, important book.” Still extraordinary, still important, this electrifying story has transformed Malcom X’s life into his legacy. The strength of his words, the power of his ideas continue to resonate more than a generation after they first appeared.

*****

WOW! That is the quick synopsis of this roller coaster ride! One of the BEST biographies I have read that made me slow down and read at a much slower speed than usual. THIS book truly makes one see things from the perspective of a black man’s plight in America. Also, the trials he went through after giving his all for the Nation of Islam only to be turned on by the viscous powers that were at the time. Truly sad, but also truly enlightening! The discovery of how the Islamic faith was being misused and mis-taught by those who chose to use the faith itself as a means to an end. Malcolm X’s thoughts on the white man had changed when he went on his pilgrimage to Mecca seeing all those who were black, brown and white showing their brotherly love toward one another. Malcolm X stood up for what he believed and lived out such a life. We could all learn from his life and his trials.

While I disagree with the Islamic faith, this did show us one thing…that the Christians of that time could learn a thing, or two, from those of Islam, in how we treat one another.  This was well worth the time to read!

Alison’s Choice

Alison's Choice

Alison, a teen, is facing pregnancy. With nowhere to turn, she finds herself in a ‘clinic’ about to end her baby’s life. Suddenly a man appears. His mop tells her he’s the janitor. Conversation begins and it quickly becomes clear that this man is no mere janitor, but Jesus manifest. And he’s come to save the life of her baby.

When young Alison finds herself pregnant by a dead-beat boyfriend, she turns to abortion. There in the clinic, as she waits for her name to be called, she encounters a cast of extraordinary characters; a flamboyant counselor, a suburban mom, a heart-weary receptionist, an inner city counterpart – And more than anyone, a gentle-faced janitor with mop “eternally” in hand. The two begin to talk and it quickly becomes clear he is no mere janitor, but the living God manifest – and He’s come to plead for the life of her baby. With the clock ticking precious minutes away, it is a fight for life or death. Suddenly a nurse appears, “Alison, we’re ready for you.” What will Alison choose.

*****

An excellent movie depicting the struggles of a young women in the throws of love and the torment to abort their baby…all for the thought of love.
